      Parts of the blood

image.png

1.  Plasma
   Carries nutrients in the blood.

2.  Red blood cells
    Carries oxygen in the blood.

3.  White blood cells
Defend body against pathogens (disease causing microbes).

Red Blood Cells

To carry MORE oxygen around the body for aerobic respiration,

red blood cells are adapted by having

1.  A biconcave shape

2.  No nucleus

 3. Haemoglobin

     Haemoglobin + O2         oxyhaemoglobin

White Blood Cells

Part of the immune system which destroys pathogens.

Pathogens = disease causing microbes (bacteria, viruses & fungi).

1.  Phagocytes.  (PEDE)

Destroy pathogen by phagocytosis.

Phagocytosis

Phagocyte engulfs pathogen and release digestive enzymes to destroy pathogen

once inside cell.

2.  Lymphocytes (LA)

Produce specific antibodies to one particular pathogen.

Different pathogens cause lymphocytes to produce different antibodies.
